Rejecting entrenched stereotypes, these courses will provide you with all the tools you need to discover authentic, relevant, nuanced characters within Shakespeare’s texts, and develop storytelling choices that will speak to our contemporary audiences. We will explore:

  • an investigative approach to developing character, sifting fact from fiction.

  • a bare bones process through which we strip text down to identifiable, undiluted clues.

  • enabling us to acknowledge and ditch habitual suppositions and break through our inherited biases.

  • supporting our discoveries with a detailed and methodical approach to text, we will back up our research by enhancing our skills in deciphering and delivering Shakespearean verse and prose.

 SERIES ONE -

WORDS WITH WOMEN

In Words With Women, we will focus on the creation of authentic female characters within Shakespeare's plays.  Our work will start with an exploration of Lady Anne’s dilemma in Richard III, after which participants will choose their own character from Shakespeare to work on. We will then develop individual performance within a supportive group framework.

Additionally, we will explore:

  • gender swapping and gender fluidity in our character choices and development; when, where, and why..

  • the obstacles we continue to face in bringing our feminist voices to the stage, and set out clear strategies for what we can do to overcome them!

This course will enable you to create female characters that surprise, illuminate, challenge and thrill audiences.

SERIES TWO

CONCORD AND DISCORD

In Concord and Discord, we will focus on the iconic, complex relationships at the heart of Shakespeare's plays.  Hamlet and Ophelia, Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. You don't have to wonder far into Shakespeare's cannon of work to come up against these controversial and contradictory couples. We'll work together to get to the heart of what drives their words and actions, to reject easy stereotypes, and to question our former assumptions in order to find authenticity and relevance in their journeys. Participants will then work in pairs on their chosen duos from Shakespeare's works, developing scenes within a supportive group framework.

Additionally, we will explore:

  • gender swapping and gender fluidity in our character choices and development; when, where, and why..

  • gender stereotypes in relationships, sifting fact from fiction, myth from reality, and refining the narrative between these glorious and notorious couples
